What are The Baby Blues?

’Baby Blues’  is a period of mild depression which affects new mothers, usually starting 3 or 4 days after baby is born.  Baby blues is common, affecting up to 80% of women. It is thought to be due the pregnancy hormones leaving your body.

Symptoms of Baby Blues

  • Increased tearfulness for no apparent reason
  • Tiredness
  • Irritability
  • Feeling sad; or mood swings
  • Feeling anxious
  • Worrying excessively about minor problems
  • An overwhelming sense of responsibility
  • Unable to sleep

The symptoms tend to be at their worst on day 4 or 5, but usually gets better by themselves, and should only last a matter of days. However if your symptoms last more than 2 weeks then you should seek help. Describing all your symptoms will help to make a diagnosis.
